Eyeshadow Tips for Women Over 50

I like make-up, it’s a great way to enhance your beauty and build your confidence. In fact, it can actually make or break an outfit. Wearing making up for me is a guilty pleasure because there are so many incredible products on the market now. However, for #womenover50 we need to factor in how these products will perform on our skin depending on skin texture issues, #hyper-pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and the list goes on. Here are a few tips that work for me and maybe you can give them a try.

The application of #eyeshadow isn’t difficult, you just have to work with your eye shape, and note what is important to you. Do you want to focus on the shape of your eyes, or do you want to play with a range of colour palettes, or do you want one shade to give the eyes a wash of colour? It’s all a matter of personal choice. I like to keep it simple when it comes to eyeshadow primarily because I like to focus on my lips with a bright colour pink or red to help perk my face up little.

Here’s my tips:

1. Always apply a primer, this will even out skin texture and create a smooth base coat for your eyeshadow.

2. You can’t blend enough when it comes to eyeshadow. Blending is the key to bringing uniformity to colours you wear and help prevent stark sharp lines that look harsh. A good blending brush is a tool you can’t afford to skip on.

3. Apply a lighter shadow in the inner corner of the eye to reflect and make your eyes look younger. Most eyeshadow palettes have a selection of paler shadows be sure to make there’s not too much glitter in the eyeshadow to avoid it settling in any #wrinkles.

4. To create eyes that standout without lining your eyes with black liner which can give a pander-like look, using a dark brown eyeshadow still allows the eyes to stand out with looking stark or harsh.

5. Know the colours that suit your eye colour the best because this really helps to create flattering looks. Top makeup artist Bobbi Brown recommends referring to a colour wheel to understand how the right colours work well together. For example; here are some recommendations based on eye colour.

Brown eyes: Khaki, brown, dark green, navy, copper, rust, gold. Daring and fun colours: Orange, deep pink, royal blue, sky blue.

Green eyes: Shades of green, from dark green to light green, plum, lilac, purple and brown. Daring and fun colours light green including lime, vibrant purple and molten gold.

Blue eyes: Copper, coral, bronze, grey, deep blue and brown. Daring and fun colours fuchsia, turquoise, and silver.

6. Want your eyes to stand out, highlight the inner corner of the eye with a light shade, a highlighter shade that you use under your brow would also work.

7. Practice, practice, practice. I watched a video featuring Joan Collins, who is famous for her sophisticated full-face makeup look. She creates these looks herself and does not rely on a makeup artist. Her advice is to get to know your face, practice and play with your makeup. Once you have the colours that you like practice applying them to look as seamless and effortless as possible. Once you’ve mastered this, it will literally take you 10-15 minutes to do your face start to finish to create a polished and more natural look.

I hope you find these tips helpful. I must stress that there are really no hard or fast rules. These days women can wear what they like without fitting into a box. As long as you use the right products and you can pull off a look, then why not? Life is too short.
